Trigger point muscle therapy, or myotherapy, can be a very effective method of decreasing pain and increasing mobility and flexibility.

The muscles are most frequently the major source of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, often mistakenly presumed to be solely the effect of arthritis.

The above list is a partial enumeration of a wide variety of conditions that have responded to trigger point therapy. We’ve had people who suffered from pain and dysfunction for many years that in a matter of a short number of sessions had dramatic improvement.

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are tight, contracted spots in muscles that can refer pain, tingling, or numbness to distant areas.

For example:

  • Horizontal pain across the low back may be coming from abdominal muscles on the front.
  • Hand symptoms may come from throat muscles.
  • Dental/facial symptoms may be from neck muscles.
  • Eye pain may be from a shoulder muscle.
  • Heel pain could be from leg and foot muscles.

How Does It Work?

Our professional staff is highly skilled in finding and eliminating these trigger points. We apply pressure, usually with our fingers, which causes the points to relax or release.

We press on these spots, usually holding or goading them for five to twenty seconds, then move onto the next point. Then we will passively stretch, or relax, the muscles that have been worked on (meaning we move the body part for you while you relax).

We will show you gentle relaxation and stretch exercises that you can do at home to maintain and improve your progress.

We also may recommend that you drink additional pure water or fruit juices to help facilitate eliminating toxins that were trapped in the tight muscles. Occasionally we may also recommend herbal, vitamin, or mineral supplements to help in maintaining the relaxation of muscles and detoxification that can minimize soreness and pain.

Known For Centuries

The entire concept of pain referral and trigger points has been known for thousands of years. In our era it has been researched and published by Dr. Janet Travell, MD (President John F. Kennedy’s personal White House physician) in her historic two volume text, “Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual”.

Unlike the early work of Dr. Travell, we do not use injections, but utilize the manual method described above to extinguish trigger points and their pain referral production. The sessions in our office are usually either 30 or 60 minutes in duration, as we have found that in most cases a few minutes is not sufficient to quickly improve problems.
